This Cat Has Fangs!
Based on a cult synth classic that prowled onto the scene in the mid-1970s, the Behringer CAT duophonic analog synthesizer has a foreboding growl and a fierce bite owing to its dual-VCO design, four mixable waveforms, and gritty white noise generator. With a sleek interface befitting its name, the CAT takes a straightforward approach to synthesis with a few surprising twists to produce some seriously aggressive synth tones. The CATâs two analog VCOâs can be independently controlled for laying down fat basslines under sinewy leads in real time or stacked in unison. The CAT lets you blend four variable oscillator shapes â sawtooth, triangle, modulated pulse, and sub-octave square â to produce uber-dense synth tones, which can be further manipulated from six different modulation sources, and a dedicated true-analog sine/squarewave LFO. A self-oscillating-resonant filter and transient generator sharpen the CATâs fangs by allowing detailed control over its harmonic behavior and envelope generation.
Tricks of the Tail
The secret to the CATâs distinctive sonics is a bevy of unique soundshaping controls. Execute massive one or two octave bends using its Pitch Bend slider control and change the speed of note transitions with the Glide slider. The Catâs VCA comes equipped with an attack/release transient generator to produce a characterful attack each time you hit a note. With the sample and hold set to noise mode, the CAT spins into chaotic convulsions, perfect for dystopian soundscapes. You can even feed the two oscillators into each other for twisting, evolving waveshapes that will claw out of your speakers.
Eurorack and Poly Chain Compatible
The Behringer CAT can be used as a desktop module or integrated into a Eurorack system and MIDI setup via 5-pin DIN or USB-MIDI. Featuring Behringer's Poly Chain capability, the CAT is combinable with multiple synthesizers for up to 16 voice polyphony. It also includes an external in, so you can shape and mangle guitars, vocals, drum machines, and more with the CATâs killer filter and modulators.
