Heraclius, the exarch of Carthage, and his son Heraclius Constantine, led a revolt against the unpopular usurper Phocas in 610AD, Heraclius Constantine becoming emperor. The Byzantine Empire was threatened by the Persian Sasanians when he took power but, after initial defeat, Heraclius Constantine drove the Persians out of Asia Minor, defeating them at the Battle of Nineveh in 627AD.
