Description
France, 19th Century A distinguished and decorative set of twelve oval Limoges enamel medallions, each finely painted in grisaille on a deep black ground, portraying Roman emperors in classical profile. Each emperor is crowned with a hand-painted green laurel wreath — symbol of triumph and imperial authority — and inscribed in gilt Latin lettering. The portraits echo the refined aesthetic of ancient Roman coinage, reflecting the strong Neoclassical influence of 19th-century French decorative arts. Executed in the celebrated enamel tradition of Limoges, the figures are rendered in soft tonal gradations of white and grey, creating a sculptural, cameo-like effect against the dark background. The gilded oval mounts enhance their richness and classical presence. The medallions are presented in a custom gilt frame, arranged in harmonious symmetry, offering both historical gravitas and decorative impact. Technique Hand-painted enamel on copper (grisaille), gilt mounts Origin Limoges, France Period 19th Century (Neoclassical Revival) Condition Age-related wear consistent with period, including minor enamel loss and surface patina, adding to authenticity and character. Suggested Placement Ideal for libraries, studies, formal salons, or interiors with classical or academic inspiration. A refined statement piece blending history, artistry, and timeless European craftsmanship. Heiqht: 50 cm Width: 45 cm less
